Newcastle Benfield away to Hebburn Town -match preview

Hebburn Town v Newcastle Benfield
Ebac Northern League Division One
The Energy Check Sports Ground
Saturday 14th March 2020 (15.00 ko)

Newcastle Benfield make the short journey over to Hebburn Town this coming Saturday as the Lions look to win at The Energy Check Sports Ground for the 2nd time this season.

This will be the 3rd meeting of the sides this season with honours even at this stage. In the penultimate Saturday before Christmas, the Hornets won 3-1 at Sam Smith’s Park in the reverse fixture, however the Lions were to gain revenge at the end of January with a 2-0 victory on South Tyneside in the league cup.

Victory for Hebburn against the Lions could lift our hosts into 2nd place in the table, meanwhile a victory for Benfield would not alter their league position (8th) but could see the lads close the gap on the current top 6.

It is natural that the South Tyneside outfit will very much have one eye on the next two games with the FA Vase semi-final v Corinthian looming large. However, Kevin Bolam and his management team will be stressing that nobody is guaranteed a starting place for the long trip to Kent next week and that crucial league points are the most important target at this stage.

The Hornets may give leading scorer Graeme Armstrong a starting place after several substitute appearances following a nasty jaw break, however Cedwyn Scott has certainly been a more than capable deputy and may keep his place after scoring in midweek.

So far in 2019/20, Hebburn have played 14 times at home in the league, winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 5. The 8 victories have come against Ashington (5-1), Penrith (3-0), Sunderland Ryhope CW (2-0), Northallerton Town (6-1), Newton Aycliffe (2-1), West Auckland Town (3-2), Sunderland RCA (3-0) and Bishop Auckland (2-0) with the draw coming against Consett (0-0). The 5 teams to leave NE31 victorious were Guisborough Town (2-1), Thornaby (4-1), Billingham Town (4-2), Whitley Bay (2-1) and Shildon (1-0).

Benfield will be frustrated at the midweek washout which wiped out the league cup tie against Newton Aycliffe but at least any minor knocks from last weekend should have cleared. Neither side have any fresh suspensions to contend with.

With an ever changing world landscape due to the ongoing Coronavirus health crisis, please keep a check on our Twitter page/website and the Northern League website for any updates regarding upcoming fixtures in the coming weeks.

After Saturday, the lads are next scheduled to be in action on Saturday 21st March with a rearranged fixture at Shildon after the contest earlier in the season was called off at the 11th hour due to a waterlogged pitch.
