Newcastle Benfield Match Preview v Newton Aycliffe

Newcastle Benfield v Newton Aycliffe
Mitre Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup Quarter Final
Sam Smith’s Park
Wednesday 11th March 2020 (19-30)

The second instalment of our trilogy with Newton Aycliffe takes place this coming Wednesday as the men from The Beaumont Landscapes Stadium head north once again.

Although the sides contested a hard fought goalless draw a couple of weeks ago and have a further league meeting scheduled for 4th April, this middle fixture is the one that both sides will be extra keen to come out of victorious, as the reward is a semi final place in the league cup.

The competition was reorganised at the start of the season with the introduction of a group set up and therefore both clubs have played 5 times to reach this stage. Newton Aycliffe progressed to the second round after finishing second in their group behind group winners West Auckland Town. Aycliffe won 3 and lost 1 of their 4 group games, with the victories coming over Easington Colliery (4-1), Redcar Athletic (6-1) and Northallerton Town 1-0), meanwhile the defeat came against West Auckland Town (0-1). In the second round, Aycliffe won 2-1 at Sunderland Ryhope CW.

Since our 0-0 draw here at Sam Smith’s Park on 26th February, Colin Stromsoy’s men have won 2 league games at West Auckland Town (4-0) and most recently at Penrith on Saturday (4-1). Sandwiched in between those two fixtures was a 1-4 reverse at home to Hebburn Town.

Benfield reached this stage in identical fashion to Aycliffe finishing second in their group and by winning their second round fixture away from home. Group victories were secured against Thornaby (3-1), Bedlington Terriers (2-1) and Brandon United (8-0), with the sole defeat coming in the opening fixture at Consett (1-3). In the second round the Lions produced one of their best performances of the season by winning 2-0 at FA Vase semi finalists Hebburn Town.

Saturdays victory at Northallerton Town now means it’s 4 unbeaten and should the lads make it 5, they will only be one victory away from successive league cup final appearances.

Neither side have any fresh suspensions but both managers may have to shuffle their packs for any cup-tied players within their ranks.

A reminder that should the scores be level at the end of 90 minutes, there will be no extra time and the result will immediately be decided via penalty kicks.

With only 2 further home fixtures currently scheduled after this fixture, it would be good to see a decent crowd to get behind the lads as they aim to achieve a successful end to the season.

Look out for our matchday programme (£1), golden goal tickets (£1) and if you arrive early enough, why not treat yourself to one of the excellent Anarchy Brewery offerings within the clubhouse?

After Wednesday, the Lions are next in action on Saturday when we head across to Hebburn Town for a league clash.
