Newcastle Benfield away to Northallerton Town

Northallerton Town v Newcastle Benfield
Match Preview

Newcastle Benfield head to bottom placed Northallerton Town this afternoon looking to get March off to a good start and put a disappointing February behind them.

After securing a quarter final slot in the league cup back at the end of January, the Lions have been unable to find that elusive next victory, although the draw secured at Guisborough Town in our last away jaunt was certainly a fine result and will give the lads confidence ahead of this long trip.

Northallerton have found life tough in their first season back in the first division having secured promotion last season by finishing third in the second division behind the runaway front two, Billingham Town and Thornaby.

In 26 matches to date, Northallerton have won 6, drawn 1 and lost 19. The record at their Calvert Stadium base reads played 13, won 3, drawn 1 and lost 9. The 3 victories came against West Auckland Town (1-0), Whitley Bay (1-0) and Penrith (3-0), with the sole draw secured against Consett (0-0). The 9 defeats were against Newton Aycliffe (0-1), Sunderland RCA (1-2), Guisborough Town (0-3), Bishop Auckland (1-2), Ashington (1-2), North Shields (2-3), Shildon (0-3), Stockton Town (1-2), Hebburn Town (1-4).

With the 3 home victories for Town all to nil, the Lions will be confident of securing victory should they strike first. However, trips to Northallerton are always tough as their victory against West Auckland, draw against Consett and narrow defeat to runaway leaders Stockton Town show.

For the Lions, the management team will be looking for a positive result ahead of Wednesdays crucial league cup encounter against Newton Aycliffe. Neither side have any fresh suspensions, although both managers may make changes after disappointing results last time out.

Victory for the Lions could lift the team to 8th in the table, meanwhile should Northallerton take maximum points, they could climb out of the bottom 3 and into 17th position, both outcomes are of course dependent upon other results.
