Newcastle Benfield v Newton Aycliffe
Match Preview

As we approach March, Newcastle Benfield and Newton Aycliffe are yet to face each other in 2019/20 but in approximately 6 weeks time, they will have locked horns 3 times.

The first of the 3 meetings comes this Wednesday as Colin Stromsoy brings his team to Sam Smith’s Park in the Ebac Northern League. The men from The Beaumont Landscapes Stadium return to Walkergate on 11th March for a league cup quarter final before Benfield travel to County Durham at the start of April with more league points up for grabs.

Having finished 12th of 18 last season, Aycliffe are having an eye catching season this year under the guidance of ex Team Northumbria coach Stromsoy and currently sit in 7th position at the time of writing with some impressive results being recorded along the way.

After 25 games, Aycliffe have 15 victories with 1 draw and 9 defeats. Away from home the record is played 13, won 8 with 5 defeats and no draws, thus pointing to a victory for either side on Wednesday being the likely outcome rather than a draw. Those 8 victories have come at Northallerton Town (1-0), Thornaby (2-1), Consett (2-1), Seaham Red Star (5-0), Billingham Town (1-0), Bishop Auckland (3-2), Whickham (4-3) and Sunderland RCA (4-0). The 5 defeats have come at Stockton Town (0-5), Hebburn Town (1-2), Sunderland Ryhope CW (2-3), North Shields (2-3) and Shildon (0-2).

Having not played since 8th February our visitors should be fresh but will have to do without former vice captain Liam McNamara who has recently left to go travelling in Australia. Aycliffe have no suspensions to consider.

Meanwhile the Benfield lads should be in good spirits after Saturdays draw at Guisborough Town. Stuart Elliott and the management team will be looking to build on the positives from the weekend with two home games this week. There did not appear to be any serious injury concerns after Saturday but with the energy sapping surface at the King George V Ground, changes may be made to keep the squad fresh.

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our match day programme (£1) and look out for our golden goal ticket sellers as you enter the ground, these tickets are also £1.
