Guisborough Town v Newcastle Benfield
Match Preview

Newcastle Benfield will look to put a poor couple of weeks behind them as the lads make the long trip to Guisborough Town on Saturday afternoon.

As the Lions look for their first victory of the month, Guisborough will be looking for the victory which could potentially lift them into the top 4. The Lions will certainly have to be at their best with Guisborough unbeaten at home since the start of December.

There have been two previous meetings already this season with the reverse fixture ending all square (2-2) before arguably Benfields best all round performance of the season when the Lions won an FA Vase clash 4-0 only a few weeks later.

The Vase defeat was a rare blip in what has been a fine season so far for Guisborough and having finished 15th last season (in an 18 team league), they are one of the big success stories so far in 2019/20.

In 14 league games played at the King George V Ground, Town have won 8, drawn 1 and lost 5, with 22 goals scored and 20 conceded. The 8 victories have come against West Auckland Town (1-0), Whitley Bay (1-0), Ashington (2-1), Whickham (3-1), Northallerton Town (1-0), Seaham Red Star (2-0), Sunderland Ryhope CW (3-0) and Billingham Town (2-1).  The sole draw was against Hebburn Town (2-2) back in January. The 5 defeats were against Sunderland RCA (1-2), Stockton Town (1-2), North Shields (1-4), Shildon (1-3) and Bishop Auckland (1-4).

The Lions management team must decide whether to make changes after the midweek defeat to Sunderland RCA and will assess any knocks that were picked up. Meanwhile Guisborough must do without the suspended Harry Thompson.

For those loyal Benfield supporters who make the long trip, they will be hoping for a positive result and much improved performance after recent disappointments.

Our next match will be on Wednesday evening when Newton Aycliffe provide the opposition at Sam Smith’s Park with Northern League points up for grabs.
