Newcastle Benfield v Stockton Town match preview

Stockton Town v Newcastle Benfield
Ebac Northern League Division 1
Saturday 15th February 2020 (3pm)

Newcastle Benfield face a tough trip to league leaders and champions elect Stockton Town this coming Saturday.

The men from The Coverall Stadium currently sit 9 points ahead of second placed Hebburn Town. With the South Tyneside outfit having one eye on the FA Vase Quarter Final against Plymouth Parkway and Stockton currently having 2 games in hand, bookmakers will be offering poor value when it comes to Stockton winning the league this season. Shildon in 3rd will certainly make a fight of things, however our hosts have a 12 point advantage and a game in hand over the men from Dean Street.

Stockton have been near faultless so far in the league, having only lost 1 of their 26 games (winning 21). At The Coverall Stadium, the record is played 14, won 12 and drawn 2, whilst only conceding 7 times. The 12 victories have come against Whickham (2-0), Newton Aycliffe (5-0), North Shields (3-1), Shildon (1-0), West Auckland Town (3-0), Hebburn Town (3-1), Sunderland RCA (2-0), Penrith (5-1), Thornaby (1-0), Billingham Town (2-0), Bishop Auckland (2-1) and Ashington (2-0). The 2 sides to leave with a point were Consett (2-2) and Seaham Red Star (1-1), with Consett the only side so far to have breached the Town back line more than once in a match at the Coverall Stadium.

Benfield will be able to take heart from the reverse fixture where they more than matched Town but unfortunately for the Lions, they were undone by 2 goals in the last 10 minutes in a 0-2 defeat.

After missing the Ashington fixture, Reece Noble will come back into contention and if selected, will be hoping for a more positive outcome after being harshly red carded for a tactical foul in the second half of our last visit.

With no midweek game, Stuart Elliott will hope that any minor knocks have cleared, as he and his team develop a plan to become the first away team to collect 3 points in TS19 this season.

Away from home, the Lions are unbeaten in the league since a 4-2 reverse at North Shields back in October and with the recent cup victory at Hebburn Town still fresh, the management team in their pre-match briefings will be pointing out to the lads what they are capable of achieving.

After Saturday, our next fixture will be on Wednesday 19th February when Sunderland RCA come to Sam Smith’s Park for a league fixture (7-30pm).
