Newcastle Benfield v Ashington

Newcastle Benfield v Ashington
Ebac Northern League Division 1
Saturday 8th February 2020 (3.00pm)

After the disappointing reverse to Bishop Auckland last weekend, Stuart Elliott and the management team will be pleased that the Northern League has not joined the winter break season and will be looking for an immediate reaction to the 3-2 loss against the two blues.

Ashington provide the opposition this coming Saturday as the men from Woodhorn Lane head down from Northumberland. A positive result is not only needed to move on from last Saturday but also to make up for the 1-3 defeat in the reverse fixture back in September, when a fine Paul Brayson strike counted for nothing.

Having progressed to the league cup quarter finals after a superb victory at Hebburn Town, Benfield supporters will be expecting a performance much more like that than the late surrender a week ago.

Ashington come to Sam Smith’s Park with 7 victories from their 25 games, however, 6 of those victories have come in NE63. All associated with the Colliers will be disappointed with the away form, having only collected 4 points from their 13 games, with 11 defeats recorded.

The sole victory on the road for Ian Skinner’s side came at Northallerton Town back in October (2-1). Apart from a draw at West Auckland (0-0), no points have been collected elsewhere with defeats coming at Hebburn Town (1-5), Seaham Red Star (0-2), Billingham Town (1-2), Bishop Auckland (0-3), Guisborough Town (1-2), Thornaby (3-5), Penrith (0-3), Whitley Bay (2-3), Sunderland RCA (1-5), Consett (1-4) and Stockton Town (0-2).

The third goal in the reverse fixture was scored by Daniel O’Reilly who will be hoping to be given an opportunity to score at the other end this time around now that he is in Benfield stripes.

With a trip to Stockton Town next up, three points would be a great tonic before the trip to face the league leaders.

Aiden Haley should be available again after an early injury last week, meanwhile Ashington must do without the suspended Lewis Davison.

With Newcastle United not playing, it would be good to see an increased crowd getting behind the lions. Don’t forget, children under 16 gain free entry and for adults, we have Anarchy Brewery beers in the clubhouse, which are well worth a try.

In addition, look out for our match day programme (£1) and golden goal (£1) ticket sellers.
