Newcastle Benfield v Bishop Auckland Match Preview

Newcastle Benfield v Bishop Auckland
Ebac Northern League Division One
Sam Smith’s Park
Saturday 1st February 2020 (3.00pm)

Newcastle Benfield return to Sam Smith’s Park this Saturday after a fine week on the road, as Bishop Auckland head north.

After last Saturdays last gasp victory at Billingham Town, the lions progressed to the league cup quarter finals on Tuesday evening after a 2-0 win at Hebburn Town.

The last league fixture at Sam Smith’s Park was the disappointing draw with Penrith and therefore the management team will be hoping the performance against Newcastle United under 23’s and the two victories on the road since, will be a solid foundation for an improved performance against the two blues.

Daniel O’Reilly and Jack Cooper were cup tied on Tuesday evening and therefore could not be considered, however, both are eligible again for this clash.

This will be the first match between the two sides this season, with the reverse fixture scheduled for the start of April after being moved earlier in the season.

Bishop Auckland currently sit 10th, 1 place and 1 point above Benfield in the league table, however, the lions have 5 games in hand and a better goal difference. Amazingly, the men from Heritage Park have already played 16 of their 19 away league games, with only Thornaby and Newton Aycliffe to visit after this encounter.

Bishop’s have won 7 times on the road, drawn 1 and lost 8. The 7 victories have come at Penrith (3-2), Sunderland RCA (3-2), Northallerton Town (2-1), Whickham (4-1), Seaham Red Star (4-2), Guisborough Town (4-1) and Shildon (3-2). The 1 draw was at Sunderland Ryhope CW back in September (1-1) with the 8 defeats coming at Whitley Bay (1-2), West Auckland (1-2), Billingham Town (1-4), North Shields (0-3), Consett (1-3), Hebburn Town (0-2), Ashington (0-1) and Stockton Town (1-2).

Ian Chandler teams always like to play attacking football and therefore an entertaining match should be on the cards. The Benfield back line will certainly need to be on their toes with Chris Winn and Andrew Johnson amongst the personnel that the ex Whitley Bay manager can call upon.

After Saturday it is free week for the lads with the next scheduled fixture not until Saturday 8th February when Ashington head to Walkergate.

As per usual, look out for our match day programme (£1), together with our golden goal (£1) ticket sellers.
