Lions away to Hebburn

Hebburn Town v Newcastle Benfield
Mitre Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup 2nd Round
Tuesday 28th January 2020 (7-30pm)

Newcastle Benfield cross the Tyne on Tuesday evening as Hebburn Town await in the 2nd round of the league cup.

Having reached the final of the competition last season, Stuart Elliott will hoping his charges can go one step further this season, however a trip to the Hornets of Hebburn Town is arguably one of toughest tests around.

Kevin Bolam and his charges currently sit 2nd in the first division table and reached the knockout stages of this competition with a 100% group stage success rate. Not only did Hebburn win 4 out of 4, they scored 23 goals whilst only conceding 1 at the other end, although 56% of those goals scored came in one game as Birtley Town were on the receiving end of wide margin defeat.

Hebburn’s two home victories in the group were secured against Whitley Bay (2-1) and Chester-Le-Street Town (3-1), with away victories coming at Birtley Town (13-0) and Durham City (5-0).

In the Northern League, our hosts have played 13 times at home, winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 4. Meanwhile Hebburn remain in the FA Vase after winning at Benfield conquerors Vauxhall Motors a couple of weeks ago. A trip to Longridge Town awaits a week on Saturday in the next round.

Newcastle Benfield reached the knockout stages of the league cup after securing victory over Brandon United back at the start of the year. Although the Lions lost their first match at Consett (1-3), three successive home victories set up this evenings encounter.

After taking Newcastle United under 23’s all the way and Saturdays late victory at Billingham Town, the management team and the lads will be hoping to continue the recent good form and secure a passage to the quarter finals, although with the talent Hebburn can call upon, the Lions will need to be at their very best to progress.

Whickham v Guisborough Town
Shildon v Jarrow
North Shields v Ryton & Crawcrook Albion
West Allotment Celtic v Seaham Red Star
