Newcastle Benfield lock horns with Newcastle United under 23’s this coming Wednesday as the men from St James’ Park make the short journey to Walkergate for a senior cup quarter final clash.
This will be both teams first involvement in this season’s competition having received a bye in the first round. For any team that draws the young professional magpies progression becomes that little more tricky, however, a home fixture against Ben Dawson’s youngsters is what all teams hope for.
The under 23’s last victory came at the start of the month when Fulham were comprehensively beaten 3-0 thanks to strikes from Longelo, Toure and Fernandez. Since then the youngsters have lost 2-1 at Manchester United and most recently, drew 1-1 with Hull City last Friday afternoon.
Morpeth Town are the current holders of the trophy which began in 1884 and which is now regularly concluded with a St James’ Park final. Newcastle United who are the most successful club in the competition (39 wins) last lifted the trophy in 2018.
For those who follow Newcastle Benfield and also Newcastle United this will be a great opportunity to see how the Lions compete against illustrious opponents and it is always good to see how the young magpies develop in their future careers.
Programmes (£1) will be on sale as you enter the ground, together with golden goal tickets (£1). Our club shop (which is on your right as you enter the ground) is also stocked with Newcastle Benfield souvenirs including badges, hats and scarfs.
With a larger crowd than normal expected, please arrive early (the clubhouse will be open) and to speed up your entry, correct money would be appreciated, if possible. Please follow the instructions of club officials to ensure a smooth entry into the ground.
For those interested in Newcastle Benfields next home fixture, this will be on Saturday 1st February (3pm) against Bishop Auckland in the Ebac Northern League. Before that, we are away to Billingham Town (Sat 25th, 2.00pm kick off) and Hebburn Town (Tues 28th, 7.30pm kick off).
