Newcastle Benfield v Brandon United
Wednesday 8th January 2020
Mitre Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup – Group D
Newcastle Benfield will look to finally complete their league cup group fixtures this coming Wednesday as Brandon United make the trip to Sam Smith’s Park (19-30 kick off).
The fixture was originally scheduled for the Welfare Ground home of Brandon but after postponements for floodlight damage, waterlogged and then frozen pitches, the Northern League have taken the decision to reverse the fixture with the hope that group D fixtures can finally be completed.
The Lions need to collect at least a point to secure second place in the group and to progress to the knockout stages, meanwhile Brandon can no longer qualify after three defeats from three group games to date. If Brandon are victorious, Thornaby will qualify at the expense of Benfield, together with group winners Consett.
The lads started their league cup campaign back in September as they went down 3-1 at Consett. Subsequent home victories over Thornaby (3-1) and Bedlington Terriers (2-1) puts the Lions in third place on six points from their three games played, whilst Thornaby sit in second on six points from four played.
Brandon began their group fixtures in October with a 0-5 home reverse to Consett before further defeats at Bedlington Terriers (1-4) and Thornaby (1-6).
Our visitors have struggled in their Division Two league campaign so far and find themselves at the foot of the table after one win from seventeen games. However, Stuart Elliott and his management team will ensure complacency is not an issue as the lads look to progress in a competition where they reached the final last season.
There were plenty of positives in the weekend victory over Whitley Bay as the squad built on the excellent point which they secured at Consett a week earlier. Meanwhile, the in-form Paul Brayson will be looking to add to his three goals in two games.
Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our match day programme (£1), which features Mechack Kanda on the front cover and also look out for our golden goal ticket sellers as you enter the ground, tickets are available for £1.
*The draw for the last 16 was made on Saturday afternoon and either Thornaby or ourselves will travel to Hebburn Town in the last sixteen during week commencing 27th January.
