Newcastle Benfield Match Preview v Whitley Bay

Newcastle Benfield v Whitley Bay
Match Preview

Whitley Bay come to Sam Smith’s Park on Saturday afternoon (3pm) as both sides kick off a new decade of football in the Northern League.

It was the first match of the season back in August when the sides clashed in the reverse fixture. After the men from Hillheads took a 12th minute lead through Nathan Stephenson, the Lions roared back in the second half and took a share of the points after a fully deserved leveller from Brad Varga.

The recent addition of Jack Cooper from Ryton & Crawcrook Albion (having also represented our visitors) gives Stuart Elliott and his management team an additional option when it comes to selecting the 16. Peter Glen-Ravenhill, Ben Richardson and Aiden Haley will all be hoping to play a part as they also come up against their former club.

Whitley Bay have recently added James Fairley and goalkeeper Andy Jennison to their squad after their departures from Bishop Auckland and Hebburn Town respectively, both of whom could feature.

Our visitors find themselves sitting in 12th position in the league, which is two places and two points behind the Lions, although Benfield have played five games less. On the road, Whitley have played 11 league games with 3 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats. The 3 victories have come at Ashington (2-1), Sunderland RCA (6-2) and Hebburn Town (2-1), with the draws coming at Consett (1-1), Thornaby (2-2) and Bishop Auckland (4-4). The 5 reverses have come at Guisborough Town (0-1), Newton Aycliffe (1-2), West Auckland (1-5), Billingham Town (0-2) and North Shields (1-3).

With a run of home fixtures to begin 2020, the management team will be hoping for a positive result ahead of league cup, league and Northumberland Senior Cup fixtures, all of which come before our next away fixture later in January.

Don’t forget, programmes (£1) and golden goal tickets (£1) will be on sale as you enter the ground. Our club shop is also well worth a visit too.
