Seaham Red Star v Newcastle Benfield
Match Preview

Newcastle Benfield make the journey down the A19 on Saturday as Seaham Red Star await at The Ferguson Motor Repairs Stadium.

Both sides are unbeaten in December but each club will be looking to banish bad memories as they look to extend their respective runs. For Benfield this is a first return to the venue of last seasons harsh league cup final penalty shootout defeat to West Auckland. For our hosts, they will be hoping for a more favourable result than the 6-1 defeat in the reverse fixture in August. In fairness to Red Star, the dismissal of goalkeeper Chris Bannon seven minutes into the second half probably contributed significantly to that wide margin defeat with the scores 1-1 at that point before the lions roared to victory.

Seaham have won 2 of their 8 home league games to date with those victories coming against Ashington (2-0) and Thornaby (4-0). There has been 1 draw which came against Sunderland RCA (2-2) and 5 defeats against Guisborough Town (0-2), Northallerton Town (2-4), Newton Aycliffe (0-5), West Auckland Town (0-3) and Bishop Auckland (2-4). Current league position of Red Star is 15th.

This will be a tough contest for the Lions as they come up against some familiar faces including captain David Robinson. Stuart Elliott and his management team will also have to formulate a plan to nullify the threat of Dan Wilson, who is a fine striker at this level. However, there is talent and vast experience across the whole Seaham Red Star squad and as per usual any side managed by Mark Collingwood will be well organised and aware of their managers requirements.

With the forecast not looking too bad for Saturday, hopefully the fixture goes ahead but as ever, sensible to keep a check on social media if you are planning on travelling.

After Saturday we are away to Brandon United on Wednesday evening (18th) in the league cup – 7.45 kick off. It will be good if we can finish our group campaign prior to Christmas after seeing the fixture previously postponed on several occasions.
