Newcastle Benfield away to Whickham match preview

Whickham v Newcastle Benfield
Ebac Northern League Division One
Wednesday 4th December 2019 – 19.30ko

Newcastle Benfield head up to The Glebe Sports Ground on Wednesday evening to lock horns with Whickham in an Ebac Northern League Division One fixture.

This will be an intriguing clash with both sides keen to secure the three points for different reasons. For our hosts, this will finally be the first competitive fixture for the new management team of Matthew Pattison and John Oster, who were brought in on 11th November after long serving Robin Falcus stood down. For Benfield, the fixture is a quick opportunity to forget about Saturdays hugely disappointing Buildbase FA Vase exit at Vauxhall Motors.

Whickham have endured a tough start to the season and find themselves rock bottom of the first division table. In 7 home league fixtures to date, the Lang Jacks have won 1, drawn 1 and lost 5, something the new management team will be looking to immediately improve as they plot to move the club up the table. The sole victory was the first home league game of the season back in August when Thornaby were beaten (2-0). The draw came in Whickham’s next home league match against Shildon (1-1), with all 5 defeats coming after the Railwaymens visit. The home defeats have come against Hebburn Town (2-3), North Shields (1-3), Bishop Auckland (1-4), Billingham Town (1-4) and Seaham Red Star (2-3).

With the recent wet weather, Whickham have not played since 9th November and will therefore be keen to return to action against the Lions as Pattison and Oster begin to plot an escape route away from the relegation zone.

In last seasons corresponding fixture Benfield were only moments away from securing a 3-2 victory after a late Dale Pearson effort, before Andrew Bulford completed a hat trick and secured a point for the hosts in the 96th minute.

After Wednesday, the next date for your diary is Saturday 7th December when West Auckland Town come to Sam Smith’s Park with further league points up for grabs (3pm).
