Vauxhall Motors 2 Newcastle Benfield 0
Buildbase FA Vase 3rd Round
Saturday 30th November 2019
Newcastle Benfield crashed out of this seasons Buildbase FA Vase on Saturday afternoon as Vauxhall Motors drove themselves into the fourth round at the lions expense.
The first half was even with neither goalkeeper called upon to make any meaningful saves. The contest was certainly entertaining enough, with Benfield creating half chances and looking the more threatening but without that end result.
Paul Brayson had probably the best half chance but nothing came of the opportunity.
Having previously won 13 games in a row, a positive start to the second half from the hosts was expected and Motors certainly increased their tempo in the early exchanges.
In the 58th minute disaster struck as Joe Brandon was given far too much space and fired past Grainger to give the home side the advantage.
Benfield made three substitutions in 10 minutes as they looked to draw level with Reece Noble making a welcome return along with the introductions of Knight and Giraud.
Although the changes swung the attacking momentum in Benfields favour, Crump in the home goal was still dealing with anything thrown at him relatively comfortably. Dennis Knight had a good chance blocked and a free kick in a good position came to nothing as Brayson fired over.
It was all over in the 84th minute when the Lions conceded a penalty which those who were close to suggested was harsh. As part of the award, Reece Noble received a second yellow card and Kieran Hamm dispatched the spot kick.
The home side were able to see out the remaining time comfortably and to compound the misery, Matty Parker also received his marching orders as we entered stoppage time.
It’s back to league action on Wednesday as Stuart Elliott and the management team seek an immediate reaction to this hugely disappointing loss.
