Newcastle Benfield v Stockton Town
Ebac Northern League Division One
Wednesday 20th November 2019
Newcastle Benfield will hope that the recent poor weather improves ahead of Stockton Town’s visit to Walkergate this coming Wednesday (7-30).
The lads have now lost the last 3 games to the elements with Saturdays late postponement at Shildon being particularly difficult to take, given the players, club officials and supporters had arrived when the inevitable and correct postponement decision was made by the match referee at the 11th hour.
If conditions improve and the game goes ahead on Wednesday, a stern test awaits the Lions as 4th placed Town are having another fine season scoring regularly and only conceding 8 goals in their 13 league matches to date.
Having played 6 away league games, our visitors have impressively won 4, drew 1 and only lost 1 (their sole defeat in the league so far). The 4 victories have come at Billingham Town (6-0), Bishop Auckland (2-1), Thornaby (4-0) and Guisborough Town (2-1) with the draw recently coming at Whitley Bay (1-1) and the defeat at Ryhope CW (1-0). It shows the strength of the first division as our visitors would have been warm favourites for the trips to the Coast and Wearside but could only collect 1 point from these 2 games.
With a Buildbase FA Vase game to come and a number of games in hand compared to team around them, this could be another memorable season for this progressive club from down the A19.
Apart from long term absentees, Stu Elliott and his team will hope that they have a full compliment to pick from with any minor issues now cleared up after our enforced recent break.
Let’s hope the predicted dry spell before Wednesday helps get the fixture played, however, as per usual, keep a check on social media for any pitch inspection news.
Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our matchday programme (£1) and look out for golden goal tickets (£1) which will also be on sale near to the entry gate.
