Tom Wade targeting Northern League Cup run

Newcastle Benfield manager Tom Wade believes his side “need a good cup run” as they face Birtley Town in round two of the Northern League Cup.
Since his appointment, Wade’s side remain unbeaten in four matches and lie in 11th place in Northern League’s Division One following a 3-3 draw with Whickham last Friday.
Benfield face two cup matches in succession this week as they host Birtley in the League Cup as well as 1874 Northwich in the second round of the FA Vase.
After reaching the semi-finals of the League Cup last season, Wade is hopeful that the Lions can reclaim the trophy they last won in 2009
He said: “It is a cup you want to win.
“In cup games, it is all on the day. We have a home draw so we have to go for it.
“The club need a good cup run to keep the season alive. You want to still be in the fight for a cup or league in the last couple of months of the season.”
Benfield have won the League Cup on three occasions, with Wade guiding the club to their second title back in 2009 after beating West Allotment Celtic 2-0.
Despite Birtley playing in Division Two of the Northern League, Wade is focused  in avoiding an early exit.
“I know a bit about Birtley. They are a good club who play good football.
“We will have to be at our best to beat them as they are a very strong team.
“We have seen what happened to Whitley Bay and Ashington in the Northumberland Senior Cup so we will not underestimate them.”
