Newcastle Benfield made the short journey up to Dunston for todays match; Dunston a little like Penrith are a bogey team for the Lions and last year despite leading by two goals were beaten 6-2. Benfield welcomed Jake Orrell into the squad and he was immediately given his debut for Benfield and you could see as early as the third minute that this boy had some talent. Showing incredible control he took the ball down in one touch to shoot at goal his effort was half saved causing a scramble in the Dunston penalty area.Despite the ball bobbling about the six yard box non of the Benfield players could get a real decent strike on the ball and it was cleared away from danger.

Nothing of any real note occured until the 15th minute when Dunston were awarded a free kick out on the left wing, kicking with the wind in their favour the ball was floated into the Benfield box and was headed clear only to be controlled by Liam Thear who was unfortunate to see his effort hit the Benfield side netting. Dunston came close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute, the ball was controlled by Dunston full back Dan Halliday, advancing forward he saw that the Benfield defenders were retreating and after getting 20 yards from goal he let fly with the ball just clearing the Benfield crossbar.

In the 24th minute a well constructed move involving Ritchie Slaughter and Jake Orrell gave Paul Brayson a half chance but good anticipation from Dunston keeper Niall Harrison saw him advance from his goal area to clear the ball away from the Benfield striker.

A chance to open the scoring in the 25th minute came the way of the home team; a good move involving Adam Rundle who linked up well with Steven Anderson saw the latter shoot and unfortunatly for him his effort struck the outside of the post and away to safety. Anderson was again involved in the next Dunston attack trying to capitalise on a mistake by Benfield central defender Lewis Scorgie who tried to dribble the ball out of defence and was easily dispossesed by the Dunston striker. After moving forward to the Benfield penalty area he proceeded to deliver a brillaint low cross thru the Benfield six yard box just evading Adam Rundle who had thrown himself at the ball.

Half an hour had passed and although Benfield were defending against a strong wind they were defending well not giving much chance of shooting opportunities to the home team, and in fact it was Benfield in the 32nd minute who came close to scoring, after being fouled just outside of the Dunston penalty; Paul Brayson stepped to hit the ball into  the Dunston defensive wall with the ball rebounding out to Dylan McEvoy who hit his drive just over the cross bar.

Halftime was approaching and it looked like Newcastle Benfield had done the hard work not giving Dunston much of a scoring chance and it was in fact the visitors who opened  the scoring in the 42nd minute. A long pass out of defence by Lewis Scorgie was pounced on by PAUL BRAYSON, gaining control he cut in from the left to hit a low drive into the net past the diving Niall Harrison making the score 1-0 to Newcastle Benfield which was the score at half time.

Newcastle Benfield opened up well in the second half; a fine move ended when a brilliant low cross from Dylan McEvoy similar to Dunston’s in the first half was missed by inches leaving the score still at 1-0 to Benfield. This was to change however a minute later, fifty one minutes had passed when a fine thru ball from Ritchie Slaughter was pounced on by debutant JAKE ORRELL who was having a fine game and looked dangerous every time he got the ball. Surging forward he side stepped Dunston keeper Niall Harrison to advance forward and confidently pass the ball into an empty net making the score 2-0 to Newcastle Benfield.

The score line didn’t deter Dunston from trying to get a goal back and in the 53rd minute they nearly got their goal but after a scramble in the Benfield penalty area they saw the ball cleared away to safety. The game had reached the hour mark when a fine pass from Ritchie Slaughter put Paul Brayson clear but good defending saw a strong block on the  ball saw the danger everted. Dunston came back into the game as they had nothing to lose being two goals down and in the 66th minute Steven Anderson who had been a late  replacement for Mark Fitzpatrick who was injured in the warm up should have done better. Again a lapse in concentration by the Benfield defence allowed the Dunston striker a free run into the Benfield penalty area but he had no finish hitting the ball high over the bar missing a good opportunity to get a goal back.

This was the start of a good attacking spell for the home team and they had three good chances to get on the score sheet, in the 68th minute only the alertness of Benfield captain Mark Turnbull denied Dunston a goal from a corner when he was in the right position to clear the ball away off the line from a strong header by David Hiftle Two minutes later Dunston had another chance and again it was Steven Anderson; receiving the ball from Carl Jones and advancing forward he hit his shot a poorly as his first effort hitting the ball well wide of  the Benfield goal. Although having missed two good scoring chances credit must be given to Anderson for getting into good shooting positions and he was in one of those in the 79th minute, a brilliant cross to the far post from Michael Hall saw the Dunston striker put a strong header on target only to be denied by a fine save  from Benfield keeeper  Andrew Grainger keeping the score at 2-0 to Newcastle Benfield. With time running out and only a minute to go another goal was scored and sadly for the Dunston supporters it went the way of the visitors, Brayson played a pass out wide to Jake Orrell who had made an excellent debut and had scored also, this time he was the provider hitting a low  cross into the Dunston penalty area to be met by JOE HAILES who gave a man of the match performance by hitting the ball home from close range rounding off a fine Benfield team performance with a 3-0 victory over an inform and very good Dunston U.T.S.team.
