Derek Darky Gair who at the age 79 has been involved in Non League Football for over 60 years.

Derek has no plans to retire and looks in better shape than our manager Mark Convery 😜.

The Lions gained an overdue win against an inform Consett side ending a concerning run of poor league form by Newcastle Benfield.

Benfield whose squad has been depleted with injuries started the game with the return of former player Jack Errington in the centre of midfield. However after a few passes and a defensive error with a slack back pass it was Consett who opened the scoring in less than 20 seconds with Jack Elliot capitalising on the mistake

Oliver Leedham came close to an equaliser after 10 minutes with his shot rattling the post and going wide but it was a Paul Brayson penalty that got Benfield back into the game after he was fouled by Ross Coombe.

Consett who had control of the game for the first 15 minutes nearly went behind after a decent effort by Dylan McEvoy strike But it was Benfield legend Paul Brayson with a Brace who gave Benfield the lead after a long ball forward.

David Dowson pulled one back for the Streelmen with a strike from the edge of the box Levelling the scores at 2-2 .

But after a short period of time Dylan McEvoy regained the lead for Benfield scoring directly from a corner giving the Lions the lead at the interval

The second half started with the same goal feast action as the first with both teams having decent chances but it wasn’t until the 71st minute whereupon Alex Nisbet returning back from suspension headed Benfield into a 4-2 lead.

Consett came close to a quick reply and a lifeline but Sweet failed to connect to Mackay s cross and it was Dylan McEvoy who wrapped up the win after good work from the old pros Brayson and Steve Bowey Final score 5-2
