Newcastle Benfield were comfortably beaten by Northern League leaders Morpeth Town, suffering a 3-1 defeat.
First half-goals from Morpeth’s Sean Taylor and Liam Henderson gave The Highwaymen comfortable breathing space before Henderson grabbed his second in the second half.
Benfield’s Ryu Williamson marked his return to the club with a late consolation for The Lions.
Despite having a fantastic run in the FA cup the loss means Benfield have failed to register a win in their last four league matches and have not won a home league match since August.
Morpeth started the game strongly and took the lead on four minutes as Ben Sayer curled in a cross towards the back post, where Taylor was situated to head past Andrew Grainger.
Henderson extended his side’s lead in the 21st minute, as the forward got to the ball before the rushing Grainger to place the ball into the net.
To make matters worse, Benfield’s Dan Taylor was taken off on a stretcher. The striker, who had just recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines, was left in agony clutching his leg.
In the second half, Morpeth began brightly as Wayne Phillips’ long range strike clipped the top of the crossbar.
Benfield’s goalkeeper Grainger, who had pulled off great saves from Sayer and Reid, was beaten once again by Henderson in the 63rd minute as he powered past the defence to slot the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
Benfield did reduce the deficit late on as Williamson,
who was making his first start since re-joining the club, was played through by Richie Slaughter
before calmly placing the ball past Morpeth’s Karl Dryden.
The Lions will be looking to get back to winning ways when they face Consett AFC on Saturday afternoon.
