West Auckland Match Report

This was the final home game of the season for Newcastle Benfield and the saying is leave the best for last; in this case it was save the worst for last with an abysmal performance from the Lions. It took sixteen minutes of the game before anything of note occurred and it was a goal, good individual play, a left foot shot by Darren Richardson hit the post with the ball rebounding out to Kerry Hedley who played a pass to ZAK BOAGEY who chipped the ball over the head of Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger to make the score 1-0 to West Auckland. In the 29th minute West Auckland were only denied a second goal by a brilliant save from Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger who somehow managed to fingertip a free kick taken by Ross Gardner onto the cross bar and away to safety. It was the visitors again in the 40th minute who came close to scoring, a West corner on the right was half cleared to the edge of the penalty area to be put back into the danger area with a back heel by Ibrahim Hassan fortunately going straight into the arms of the Benfield keeper. This left the score at 1-0 to West Auckland which it was at halftime.

Although the game was low on quality the visitors were looking the better side and should have added to their tally in the 51st minute, poor play by Benfield defender Stephen Tobin allowed West Auckland substitute Tom Marron a free run in on goal but he put his effort past the far post when the least he should have done was hit the target.

Although Benfield were huffing and puffing in an attempt to get an equaliser, the West Auckland defenders were quite comfortable at the back and not under much pressure and were dealing easily with any goal threats from Benfield. The 82nd minute had arrived before Benfield had a small sniff of a goal scoring chance; substitute Matty Fisher chipped the ball to the far post to find Josh Scott. After controlling the ball he hit a strong shot on target but Lewis Galpin made a good block before it reached the West Auckland goal. This left the score at 1-0 to West Auckland which was the final score.
