Match report v Sunderland Rca

NEWCASTLE BENFIELD 0 SUNDERLAND R.C.A. 1 – ABANDONED

On a bitterly cold day and after two pitch inspections the match referee Lucy Oliver deemed the game was ok to start despite it being the only Northern league match in the Newcastle area to not be postponed.

The home team could have been two goals up in the first three minutes of the game. The first chance came in the 1st minute when a pass from Dylan McEvoy was miscontrolled by Clayton Davis; this allowed Benfield striker John Campbell to gain possession of the ball and advance forward to shoot at goal. Although the Benfield forward player hit a powerful shot at goal it went inches wide when the least he should have done was hit the target. Two minutes later and this time Campbell was the provider laying the ball off to Scott McCarthy, the Benfield mid fielder twisted and turned in order to get a shooting position which he did to hit a strong effort but RCA goalkeeper Jonathan Carmichael brought off a great save to keep the scores level.

It was in fact the visitors who opened the scoring in the 5th minute, when a mix up in the Benfield defence between Lewis Scorgie and Matty Cornish saw STEPHEN CALLEN gain possession before playing an excellent 1-2 with Colin Larkin. He then rolled the ball into the net for a fine goal giving Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger no chance of saving, making the score 1-0 to Sunderland R.C.A. The visitors can count themselves unfortunate not to get a second goal in the 10th minute, after a through ball found Michael Charlton, advancing into the Benfield penalty area he chipped the ball over the head of the advancing Benfield keeper but unluckily for him his effort hit the post and went out for a goal kick.

The match only lasted another 10 minutes before the referee decided to abandon due to conditions worsening; the home team obviously wanted to continue, but the visitors even more so as they looked the more likely team to get a goal and looked the better team. It wasn’t to be however and with the sun going down, the conditions would probably got worse but we will never know as the match was abandoned. Newcastle Benfield have decided when the match is replayed on Wednesday 22 March that admission will be free with any donations at the turnstile going to charity.
