Newcastle Benfield 2 Thackley 0
Saturday 6th August 2016
On our way to our Wembley appearance Newcastle Benfield had to firstly overcome Thackley AFC from Yorkshire in the preliminary round.
The first real attack of note came on the 7th minute mark and it was the visitors, a long pass down the flank by Kristian Hargreaves found Dan Broadbent who cushioned a header into the path of Callum Marshall who saw his well struck shot just clear the Benfield cross bar.
Three minutes later Benfield could have been a goal down, mid field player Tom McNamee dallied on the ball and instead of playing it forward played it back towards his goal keeper Andrew Grainger who raced out of his goal and was just beaten to the ball, however the ball went to a tight angle allowing Benfield defender Mark Turnbull the chance to put in a tackle to half clear the ball eventually made safe by Lewis Scorgie. At this stage the visitors looked more dangerous and were on top, it took a good clearance in the 17th minute from Lewis Scorgie who cleared the ball for a corner after a strong run and cross by Thackley’s left winger Aodhan Brownlee.
The 20th minute mark had arrived with no goals but Benfield had a great opportunity, the ball was played to debutant Scott McCarthy who turned and showed a clean pair of heels to Thackley’s Kristian Hargreaves who in his attempt to clear the ball clipped the Benfield striker’s heels with the referee awarding a penalty. Up stepped Paul Brayson who hit his penalty low to the keeper’s right and saw Matt Convey pull of a great save pushing the ball onto the bar and cleared to safety
The home team were starting to get more into the game in an attacking sense and could have opened the scoring in had Thackley’s keeper Matt Convey not been alert. It started when a ball was switched from the left by Kieran Wrightson to Jake Trodd, after controlling the ball he rolled the ball to Paul Brayson who saw his left foot effort saved by the keeper.
Next a strong run by Aodhan Brownlee saw his cross met by Callum Marshall but his weak effort was easily saved by Grainger in the Benfield goal.
Only two minutes had lapsed after the penalty miss when Benfield got an opening goal, a long pass from right to left wing was controlled by Scott McCarthy he then took on the full back reaching the goal line before looking up to find JOSH SCOTT on the edge of the box with his low drive skimming into the bottom corner past the outstretched arm of the Thackley goalkeeper Matt Convey making it 1-0 to Newcastle Benfield.
Within a minute it could have been 1-1 when an excellent effort from Thackleys Dan Broadbent saw his 25 yards shot hit the top of the bar. Benfield’s central mid fielder Tom McNamee had a good chance to increase the lead in the 31st minute when a defensive header fell to him on the edge of the penalty area but his effort went high over the bar.
A controversial decision in the 36th minute occurred when the referee gave a penalty to the visitors, Dan Broadbent passed the ball past Lewis Scorgie and Marc Dummett, the Benfield defenders closed the gap with Lewis Scorgie taking the ball away but the centre forward ran into the back of him with the referee saying the attacker had been pushed first.
Up stepped Broadbent hitting a strong low drive which was brilliantly saved by Benfield’s Andrew Grainger, the ball rebounded back to Broadbent but he hit it height over an empty goal. This was the third penalty this season that Benfield have conceded and they have all been saved by the Benfield keeper.
Half time was nearing when Benfield got a second goal. A Thackley corner was well cleared to find Jake Trodd and the young winger went one on one with defender Hargreaves and after advancing past him ran to the line and driving in a low cross which was met by the advancing SCOTT McCARTHY who slotted home from the six yard line to make it 2-0 to the home side.
The second half was basically a non-event apart from Thackley defender Kristian Hargreaves being shown a straight red card in the 58th minute for something he said to the referee after a decision went against him.
In the 67th minute Thackley winger Ryan Farrell had a good effort just clearing the bar and two minutes later a cross from Marc Dummett gave Dean Walker a headed chance. The final attack of note came in the 74th minute when a strong run and cross just evaded Paul Blackett who flung himself at the ball just missing making contact, leaving Benfield 2-0 winners and with an away tie at Padiham in the next round.
